The Secret of Success – less than 10% have it…

Posted by | February 18, 2015 | Advice, Career

Via LinkedIn : I am 51 – I know I don’t look it in my picture (no comments thanks…) but really I am…

It’s Valentines Day, and I have just put together a Treasure Hunt around the house including chocolates, champagne and jewellery hidden in clue determined spaces in cars, fridges and even within a drum kit…

After 36 years together; this just seemed like a fun way to surprise Lynn, and let her know that she is Wife almighty; got me thinking too…

I have been what most people call “LUCKY” in my marriage, my career and generally in life; other people are even more “LUCKY” than me, however, plenty of people are comparably “UN-LUCKY”…

I was always the prize winner – Apprentice of the Year; twice no less…

First to get promoted, youngest Operations Manager, selected to sit on the Board, head-hunted to become Managing Director, successful Business Owner and Entrepreneur…

But is this really LUCK..?

I remember in the early 2000’s we bought a Business Coaching Franchise to kick start our new business in the UK – we thought that buying in to a proven system would mean that success was assured…

6 months into the Franchise and we were nearly bankrupt – we had around £5,000 left in the business account, no clients and no prospect of finding any…

Then I won another award – “West Midlands Coach of the Year..” which effectively meant that I was the ONLY Coach in the West Midlands and therefore by definition the best one…

This meant that I had “qualified” to go to Global Conference, which in 2003 was in Hawaii – so we decided that if we were going to go bankrupt, we may as well do it in Honolulu as opposed to Birmingham…

While we were there, we got to mix with some of the top Business Coaches in the World, chatting at the bar and having dinner with Americans, Australians and Canadians..

One night we sat with one of the Top Coaches, and after a few drinks I confided that despite my “LUCK” I hadn’t got any clients and business was tough; he said..

“Stop using the system and use your personality and intuition; use what made you successful before you became a franchisee and you’ll be fine…”

Now, for any franchisees reading this being told to stop using “The System” is like being told to commit fraud – the whole reason people buy a franchise is because it’s a proven system, right..?

When got home, I went back to what I knew best – being me, being the person who was selected to be the youngest Director, CEO and Manager, the award winner who got a distinction in his MBA just to irritate those who said he’d fail..

And guess what…

It worked, we attracted some great clients, and from that day to this our business has gone from strength to strength; we work with some amazing Business Owners, Fortune 500 companies, Premiership Football Clubs and even NHS Charity Trusts and Nightclubs…

So why am I telling you this…?

Because, in the Franchise system I saw hundreds of people buy themselves a “system” of working, and I saw plenty of them fall over and leave because they couldn’t make it work…

I saw some have great success and achieve amazing success for themselves and their clients – but what was the common denominator…?

It wasn’t simply the “system” – we all had the same system and yet the results were so different for some; it could be called LUCK but I think there is more to it…

It was the Attitude, Behaviour and Skills of the people that made the difference; I call it their ABS system…

I can spot a positive ABS system in other Business Coaches as well as my Clients; it is a key factor affecting their levels of success; I see it as it shows up in their Teams and Management structure too…

Levels of success and achievement can largely be predicted based on the following criteria..

Here’s a check-list of what a fully functional ABS system looks like;

Attitude

  1. Add value to others before seeking reward from them…
  2. Drop the ego and listen to advice, guidance and inspiration…
  3. Set high standards in everything and never quit…
  4. Think win:win in every transaction…
  5. Have clarity of purpose, passion and “why”…

Behaviour

  1. Be consistent and predictable personally and professionally…
  2. Keep promises, avoid drama and focus on the outcome…
  3. Have fun, family and positive relationships…
  4. Avoid procrastination; activity and output are the goals…
  5. Be attractive, engaging and inspirational to others…

Skills

  1. Continuously learn new skills, and be open to ideas…
  2. Be emotionally intelligent as well as academically…
  3. Teach others what you know with abundance mentality..
  4. Attend workshops, events and conferences – learn in the bar…
  5. Learn to play music, sport and games; creativity is an energy…

Most people’s ABS system is broken, give them the best “system” in the world and they will fail; only 8% of people have an effective ABS system – and these are the ones that the other 92% think are LUCKY…

It’s not LUCK it’s standards, application and hard work that generate success; it doesn’t matter what system you have, if your ABS is broken you’ll crash…

Not getting the results you want – then check your ABS system and take whatever corrective action is required…
