‘About 146,000 jobs to be created via logistics masterplan’
Via Free Malaysia Today : ‘About 146,000 jobs to be created via logistics masterplan’
Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai says the plan will turn Malaysia into the preferred logistics gateway to Asia by 2020.
The jobs, he told The Star in an interview, would be generated with the implementation of the Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan (2016-2020).
The masterplan would turn Malaysia into the preferred logistics gateway to Asia by 2020, he predicted.
“The efficiency of the logistics industry is vital as it also supports all sectors of the economy, facilitates trade, reduces cost of doing business and contributes to enhancing productivity and economic growth,” he told The Star.
Apart from creating more jobs, the masterplan would also see an increase in the contribution from the transport and storage sub sector to the Gross Domestic Product to 4.3% in 2020 or RM22.2 billion, from 3.6% in 2013, he said.
In addition, cargo volume is projected to grow by 8% annually to reach 880 million tonnes by 2020.
Liow also spoke about the ambitious Carey Island Port – a 20-year port city project with infrastructure investments of over RM200 billion covering 100 sq km.
He said it would help to cater to the growth of the economy in general and the logistics sector in particular.
The North Port and West Port, he added, were already operating at full capacity.
